A Glimpse into the Story

Step into the Story

Step into the world of Dorothea, the daughter of a merchant and mill owner who lived in the fertile heartland of Naxos in 538 BC. Guided by her voice, this immersive audio journey follows her through love, revolution, triumph and loss during one of the most extraordinary periods in the island’s history. As you walk the ancient paths around the sanctuary of Gyroulas, Dorothea recounts her life with the engineer Karion, the rise of the young leader Lygdamis, the struggle against the island’s oligarchs, and the birth of a new society. Along the way, visitors discover forgotten villages, ancient farmsteads and the remarkable temple of Demeter while experiencing a story that spans generations and culminates in the famous Persian siege of Naxos in 499 BC. Blending archaeology, history and storytelling, the hike brings to life the hopes and dreams of the people who shaped the island more than 2,500 years ago.

The late sixth century BC was an age of unprecedented innovation and change across the Mediterranean. New ideas travelled between Phoenicia, Persia, and the islands of the Aegean, transforming the way people thought about politics, religion, engineering and society. On Naxos, these changes sparked a remarkable flowering of culture. The island pioneered some of the earliest democratic reforms in the Greek world, constructed an aqueduct of astonishing ambition, and built the sanctuary of Gyroulas, whose design would help define the form of the classical Greek temple. At the same time, a new spirituality centred on personal experience and the promise of rebirth found expression in the cult of Demeter and Kore. Set amidst the fertile fields and olive groves of Sagri, this 120-minute hike invites visitors to witness the dawn of a new age whose influence would reach far beyond Naxos and shape the course of Mediterranean history.

Difficulty: Medium, with a long, gentle ascent towards the end of the hike (ca. 100m elevation); the hike runs along official hiking path 7A.
